Why mattresses are a pain to get rid of
A mattress won't fit in a car, is too big for a curbside can, and many transfer stations charge extra to take one because the steel springs and foam are hard to compact. On top of that, a queen set is awkward enough that hauling it down a staircase alone is a genuine two-person job. That's why so many end up sitting in a garage for months.
The good news: you have five legitimate options in Clark County and the greater Vancouver area, ranging from free-but-hands-on to a little money and zero effort. Here's how each one works.
1. Curbside bulky-item pickup
If you have active residential garbage service through Waste Connections, you likely qualify for a limited bulky-item pickup each year, which can include a mattress. It's the cheapest route, but you're often limited to one pickup per calendar year and have to schedule it in advance and haul the mattress to the curb yourself.
2. Drop it at a transfer station
Clark County transfer stations will accept a mattress, but you'll pay a disposal fee (often a per-item or minimum charge) and you have to get it there, which means a truck or trailer, straps, and a helper. Call ahead to confirm current fees and hours, since they change.
3. Recycle it
Mattresses are surprisingly recyclable: the steel, foam, and wood can all be recovered. Some facilities in the Portland–Vancouver metro accept mattresses specifically for recycling. If keeping it out of the landfill matters to you, this is the greenest option, though drop-off and any fees are still on you.
4. Donate it (only if it's genuinely usable)
If the mattress is clean, unstained, and free of bed bugs, a local charity or shelter may take it. Be realistic, most donation centers will not accept a worn or soiled mattress for health reasons, so this only works for a fairly new one you're upgrading from.
5. Have it hauled away
The hands-off option: a junk removal crew carries the mattress out of any room, loads it, and handles disposal or recycling for you.
