- Transfer-station fees, usually a minimum charge plus more by weight or volume, and extra for special items like mattresses, tires, and Freon appliances.
- A truck or trailer, rental if you don't own one, plus fuel for what's often a 30–60 minute round trip.
- Straps, tarps, and gloves, plus the risk of a ticket for an unsecured load.
- Your time and back, loading, driving, unloading, and often more than one trip for a big cleanout.

But once you factor in a rental, multiple trips, or a load you can't lift alone (a garage cleanout, a couch, a full trailer of yard debris), the math flips fast, and junk removal is usually the same or less once your time is counted.
The rule of thumb
- One light item + you already own a truck → DIY may be cheaper.
- Heavy, bulky, or more than fits in one easy load → junk removal usually wins.
